John Basilone “Medal of Honor”


United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone received Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross for his actions during World War II. He was the only Marine who received the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor. His participation andactions made him hero of World War II. Before joining the Marine Corps, he was serving in the United States Army. He served in the United States Army for three years. He proved himself the best one who participated in World War II. John Basilone attended the training and then he was sent to Solomon Islands, Guantanamo Bay and Cuba. In the end he was sent to Guadalcanal.

Sergeant John Basilone was killed on the very first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima and due to his actions he was awarded with Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Not only had this he also gained so much fame. Basilone was born on November 4, 1916 and at the age of 19 he settled Manville, New Jersey. His parents met at a church and got married.

He attended St. Bernard Parochial School but after receiving Medal of Honor he returned to his hometown and participated in war bond tour. On September 19, 1943 his hometown held a parade in his honor. Many politicians and celebrities also participated in the parade. After that he gained fame as a celebrity and toured around the country to raise fund for the war efforts. He married to Lena Mae Rigg.
