Galaga

Galaga remix is a space invader style game for the iphone, ipod touch and ipad. In it you have a single ship that is flying through space while your opponent has level after level of enemies that you must battle you way through as they become increasingly better at shooting back and you and flying around the screen.

When I was in elementary school my cousin had a video game system and the best of the games he had was a space invader typ game, it was a fun game in which you fought through several levels of different type of space ships and then finally got to the mother ship and tried to destroy it then started it over. I’ve been looking for that version of the game for years and perhaps the full version of Galaga Remix has something like that but in the part I have seen you are simply fighting space invaders which can fly around, which is fun but not what I’m looking for.
There are two different versions of this game. The first is original Galaga and the second is Galaga remix which has better graphics I suppose, but I actually prefer the other. Perhaps that is simple nostalgia but it just feels better. Beyond that though I really couldn’t find many differences between the game.

There are three control styles for this game. The first uses a left and right button and a fire button. This is probably the easiest though I’m not a big fan of virtual buttons. The second lets you tilt the iphone and if it were smooth would work well but it simply didn’t feel responsive enough. The third has you with a slider along the bottom of the screen. This was good except that tapping the screen to fire felt odd with this one.

In the end the real interest in this game is as a remake of the arcade or home arcade game and for this it is fine but not great. The problem is that no matter how many different control styles you have you’ll never quite match the feel of the original without the original.

Another odd thing is that for such a small screen they have a lot of wasted space with a border around the entire screen that makes it harder to use than it needed to be.
